With this past Sunday’s crushing defeat at the feet of the Jets (sorry, I couldn’t resist), the NFL season, as far as I am concerned, has come to a close. But looking toward next year, we will see one major change in NFL games, as reported by Wired and the Washington Post: accelerometers inside football helmets to allow researchers to measure the forces of hits:
After months of rumblings, the NFL appears close to instituting a system where parts of playersı uniforms, including their helmets, will be embedded with impact-sensing accelerometers to help analyze the real-time effects of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.
Update, Jan 21
Mr. Savant informs me that Purdue University has been using accelerometer data to research foortball-related brain injuries for the last few years.
