I've been staying away from the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD
debate
simply because the whole debacle has been so frustrating
for consumers. While it's still too early to declare
a winner, two recent events have got me wondering if we
may be moving toward an endgame:
- Paramount made a big stink recently
by deciding to release their movies exclusively
on HD-DVD. Their newest flagship HD-DVD release
is the 2007 Michael Bay
Transformers
flick. The HT Guys
recently discussed
some of the features of the Transformers HD-DVD that would be
impossible to replicate on the Blu-ray format.
- Wal-Mart and Best Buy caused another shockwave last week by offering the Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player
for the closeout sale price of $99 — resulting in
90,000 units sold in a 72-hour period.
Of course Blu-ray still has a trick up its sleeve: namely the Sony Playstation 3. But with prices
on HD-DVD players falling much faster than Blu-ray, I think that
this might be the beginning of the end. We'll see.
